Frederick Seidel

CIMETIERE DU MONTPARNASSE,
12EME DIVISION

I have a friend who has a friend
Who asked her to place her hand
And place a flower on Samuel Beckett's grave
On his behalf.
This man, who is in the theater, had corresponded with Sam.
My friend asked me to join her to do this.
It seemed reason enough to come to Paris.
And it was.
And there, quite a surprise, was Susan Sontag's grave.
And now it's time to get the fuck out
Of this beautiful pointlessness.

SNOW
Snow is what it does.
It falls and it stays and it goes.
It melts and it is here somewhere.
We all will get there.
Frederick Seidel

“Something is going on. Something is wrong”
Frederick Seidel-the "ghoul" (Chicago Review), the "triumphant outsider" (Contemporary Poetry Review)-returns with a dangerous new collection of poems. “Nice Weather” presents the sexual and political themes that have long preoccupied Seidel-and thrilled and offended his readers. Lyrical, grotesque, elegiac, this book adds new music and menace to his masterful body of work.
"The most frightening American poet ever-phallus-man, hangman of political barbarism-Seidel is the poet the twentieth century deserved."
-CALVIN BEDIENT, “Boston Review”

"The best of Seidel's new poems are weirder and stronger than ever. Only Stevens and Ashbery, among American poets, have settled into old age with comparably candy-colored gifts intact."
- MICHAEL ROBBINS, “London Review of Books”
"[Seidel is] a carnivore if not a cannibal in the blandly vegan compound of contemporary poetry ... Thank God for Fred Seidel."
- MICHAEL HOFMANN, “Poetry”
"There had never been a poet like this one before: the poet of a new contemporary form, a highlight reel-one spectacular feat after another, with all the humdrum stuff spliced out."
-DAN CHIASSON, “The New York Review of Books”
How violently flowers fade.
How awfully slow life is.
Ôi chao, đọc1 phát Gấu ngộ ra liền:
Dịch là huỷ diệt bản văn gốc, 1 cách nào đó, và cho nó 1 bản văn mới!

In issue 202, the Paris Review staff contributed unsigned translations of ten Apollinaire poems. The following translation of “Le Pont Mirabeau” is by Frederick Seidel.

Le Pont Mirabeau

Under Eads Bridge over the Mississippi at Saint Louis
Flows the Seine
And our past loves.
Do I really have to remember all that again
And remember
Joy came only after so much pain?
Hand in hand, face to face,
Let the belfry softly bong the late hour.
Nights go by. Days go by.
I’m alive. I’m here. I’m in flower.
The days go by. But I’m still here. In full flower.
Let night come. Let the hour chime on the mantel.
Love goes away the way this river flows away.
How violently flowers fade. How awfully slow life is.
How violently a flower fades. How violent our hopes are.
The days pass and the weeks pass.
The past does not return, nor do past loves.
Under the Pont Mirabeau flows the Seine.
Hand in hand, standing face to face,
Under the arch of the bridge our outstretched arms make
Flows our appetite for life away from us downstream,
And our dream
Of getting back our love of life again.
Under the Pont Mirabeau flows the Seine.

Vinh danh Pessoa

Chỉ vì 1 lý do,

HOMAGE TO PESSOA

I once loved,
I thought I would be loved,
But I wasn't loved.
I wasn't loved for the only reason that matters-
It was not to be.
I unbuttoned my white gloves and stripped each off.
I set aside my gold-knobbed cane.
I picked up this pen ...
And thought how many other men
Had smelled the rose in the bud vase
And lifted a fountain pen,
And lifted a mountain ...
And put the shotgun in their mouth,
And noticed that their hunting dog was pointing.

Frederick Seidel: Ooga-Booga

THE OWL YOU HEARD

The owl you heard hooting
In the middle of the night wasn't me.
It was an owl.
Or maybe you were
So asleep you didn't even hear it.
The sprinklers on their timer, programmed to come on
At such a strangely late hour in life
For watering a garden,
Refreshed your sleep four thousand miles away by
Hissing sweetly,
Deepening the smell of green in Eden.
You heard the summer chirr of insects.
You heard a sky of stars.
You didn't know it, fast asleep at dawn in Paris.
You didn't hear a thing.
You heard me calling.
I am no longer human.
-Frederick Seidel

Translation means destruction!

How violently a flower fades. How violent our hopes are

Nhà thơ của khẩu súng, phallus-man, hangman of political barbarism…

RAIN IN HELL

That was the song he found himself singing.
He heard a splash before he hit the concrete.
There was no water in the pool.
He couldn't stop himself in time.

One day, while he was waiting for the light to change,
And suddenly it began to rain,
And all at once the sun came out,
He saw a rainbow of blood.

He was so excited.
Splash.
That he dove off
The diving board without a thought.

There was no water in the pool.
He heard a splash
Just before he hit the concrete.
Gosh-

From good in bed
To as good as dead!
You smell the rain before it comes.
You smell the clean cool pierce the heat.

He has the air-conditioning on
But keeps the car windows open driving back to town.
It is the story of his life.
He smells the rain before it falls.

It was the middle of the night
In 212, the area code of love.
The poem he was writing put
Its arms around his neck.

Why write a poem?
There isn't any rain in hell
So why keep opening an umbrella?
That was the song he found himself singing.

Frederic Seidel: Poems 1959-2009
