His father was a professor of law in Warsaw, his mother a literary translator and his maternal grandfather the rector of St Petersburg University. His parents separated soon after his birth and he spent much of his childhood at Shakhmatovo, his maternal grand-father's estate near Moscow. There he discovered the religious philosopher Vladimir Solovyov and the poetry of Tyutchev and Fet, both of whom were still surprisingly little known.
