Ursula K. Le Guin

Lần thăm viếng chót
Ở trái tim của hồi nhớ, căn nhà đó,
Hồi nhớ ngập tràn tôi
Làm sao quên
Tôi đã từng ở trong căn nhà đó
Nơi tất cả hồi nhớ
Thì đều có thể nhìn được
Tôi là cái bóng của cái bóng
Một đứa trẻ
Một người khách
Một hồn ma

The Last Visit

In the heart of my memory, that house,
memories overcame me.
Only if I could forget them
would I be there, in that house.
There where all I remembered
was substance visible,
I was my shadow's shadow,
a child, a visitor, a ghost.

Ursula K. Le Guin: So Far So Good

"Poets, visionaries-the realists of a larger reality."

Legendary author Ursula K. Le Guin was lauded by millions for her groundbreaking science fiction novels, but she began as a poet.
Le Guin wrote across genres her entire career, and poetry was a cardinal mode of expression-offering a path that led readers to discover her voice at close, intimate range. In this clarifying and sublime collection, completed shortly before her death in 2018, Le Guin is unflinching in the face of mortality, and full of wonder for the mysteries beyond. Redolent of the lush natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, with rich sounds playfully echoing myth and nursery rhyme, So Far So Good lovingly plays tribute to the memories, friendships, and timeless questions that comprised a spectacular and generous life. With profound wisdom and tenacious levity, a true literary hero bookends a long, daring, and prolific career.
"I think hard times are coming, when we will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now and can see through our fear stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine some real grounds for hope. We will need writers who can remember freedom. Poets, visionaries-the realists of a larger reality."
-Ursula K. Le Guin, 2014 National
Book Awards
"It's hard to think of another living author who has written so well for so long in so many styles as Ursula K. Le Guin."
-Salon
"She never loses touch with her reverence for the immense what is."
- Margaret Atwood
"There is no writer with an imagination as forceful and delicate as Le Guin's."
- Grace Paley

Desire and Fear

A willingness to die is my desire,
not of the mind alone
but of the weary heart and weakened bone.
My fear is that the body, always wanting more,
will clutch at flames of fire
sooner than leave me free to go
on through the open door.

Ursula K. Le Guin: So Far So Good

Night

Between the blazing firmament
and the black abyss we are
in the mercy of the wind
that moves us on
through darkness over images of stars
between elements not ours.

Earth made our body,
rock made our bone.
Ocean is no man's country.
Heaven is not my home.
o may we come at last to land
in the mercy of the wind.

Westering

From sunrise the wind blows
always to sunset
going where the stars go

my breath the wind

this little boat my body
its ragged sail my soul

going where the stars go

Đi về hướng Tây

Từ lúc mặt trời lên gió thổi
Luôn luôn về mặt trời lặn
Đi nơi những ngôi sao đi

Hơi thở của tôi, gió

Con thuyền nhỏ, cơ thể của tôi
Cánh buồm rách bươm của nó, linh hồn tôi

Đi, nơi những vì sao, đi.

Ursula K. Le Guin: "So Far So Good"

Ancestry

I am such a long way from my ancestors now
in my extreme old age that I feel more one of them
than their descendant. Time comes round
in a bodily way I do not understand. Age undoes itself
and plays the Ouroboros. I the only daughter
have always been one of the tiny grandmothers,
laughing at everything, uncomprehending,
incomprehensible.

Đúng là 1 niềm vui của tháng tư buồn: All I have kept/from a time of sorrow

The Last Visit

In the heart of my memory, that house,
memories overcame me.
Only if I could forget them
would I be there, in that house.
There where all I remembered
was substance visible,
I was my shadow's shadow,
a child, a visitor, a ghost.

Where the ways grew narrow

Where the ways grew narrow
there above the sea,
tall flowers of yarrow
brushed against my knee.
All I have kept
from a time of sorrow:
a cold twilight
and the white yarrow.

Wakeful

Islanded

Snow and silence in the streets.
Winter in the bone.
In silent houses people sleep
each one alone.
Self-islanded by thought and dream
the solitary soul
forgets the deepest depth, the earth
that joins us all.

****

I

Tiếng đêm

Toa tầu, sân ga, bầy xúc vật kim loại lớn
Gầm thét xuyên qua thành phố trong đêm
Bò đực gào bò cái thất lạc
Từ xa, xa….

II

Suốt đêm, mưa đen
Trên kính cửa sổ lạnh

Xụt xùi, xụt xùi:
“Chúng mình là chị em”

I

Night Voices

The great metal cattle of the train yards
bawl and bawl across the city in the darkness
cows calling their lost calves
from farther and farther

II

All night the black rain
on the cold pane
whispers, whispers,
“we are your sisters”
