Ba Thu

THE THREE AUTUMNS

I don't understand summer smiles at all,
And winter holds no charm for me,
Yet as for autumn, almost without fail
I've noticed every year has three.

And the first one is holiday disorder
Spiteful of yesterday's summer fling.
The leaves fly like shreds of notebooks and the odor
Of haze is incense-sweet. Everything
Is moist, many-colored, shining.

The birches are the first to join the dance since they're
Draped in see-through lace and since
They've already shaken off every transient tear
Onto the neighbor over the fence.

Here's what happens when you use a story to
break the silence:
A second goes by, a minute, and then
Comes the second autumn as dispassionate
as conscience,
As somber as an air raid siren.

Everyone immediately appears pale and old.
Summer closeness doesn't exist.
And far away trumpets are parading their gold
-Music floats through the fragrant mist.

And in the waves of frankincense, cold and gray,
Is locked the high unflooded land.
But the wind stormed, things opened up,
and right away
Everyone understood: that's the end of the play.
And this isn't an autumn but death
showing its hand.

Ba thu

Mọi vật thì ẩm ướt, sặc sỡ, long lanh sáng.

Three Autumns

To me summer's smiles are simply incomprehensible,
And I can't discover the secrets of winter.
But almost unerringly I observe
Three autumns every year.

And the first-is a festive chaos
Spiting yesterday's summer.
And the leaves fall like notebook scraps,
And the smell of smoke is incense sweet,
Everything is colorful, wet and bright.

And the first to join the dance are the birches,
Throwing on transparent attire,
Hastily shaking fleeting tears
Onto the neighbor across the fence.

But it so happens-the story has just commenced.
A second, a minute-and then
The second one enters, impassive, like conscience,
Somber, like an air raid.

Everyone suddenly seems paler and older,
Summer coziness has been plundered,
And remote marches played on golden horns
Float in the fragrant fog ....

And its cold waves of incense
Seal the firmament,
But the wind tugs, flings it wide-and right away
Everyone understands: the drama is ended,
And this is not a third autumn, but death.
